Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has earned an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot as well as Rita Owens, both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked in Irvington High School. The couple split at the age of Latifah, then ten years old. Latifah was born and brought up in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah was her stage name at the time she turned eight. It means delicate in Arabic. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always tall. The song she sang was Home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among those who were part of the first version of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time, was impressed by her single. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
